What is the difference between Dominica and Dominican Republic?Dominica is often mistaken for/with Dominican Republic. This is a brief comparison of the two countries. Dominica, or The Commonwealth of Dominica, was never a Spanish colony but was given its current name by Christopher Colombus on the 3rd of November, 1493. The Colony of Santo Dominigo, now the Dominican Republic, was the first seat of Spanish Colonial rule in the Western Hemisphere. Christopher Colombus never set foot on the island of Dominica, though it is often joked that this will be the only island he will still recognize, since more 60% of the island is virgin forest and uninhabited. Christopher Colombus landed on what is now known as the Dominican Republic on the 5th of December, 1492. Dominica is a former French Colony (1690 to 1763) and then was a British Colony (1763 to 1978) until independence. Independence is celebrated on the 3rd of November every year. Whilst the Dominican Republic has mainly been a Spanish Colony (1492 to 1821/1861 to 1865), it was annexed to Haiti (1822 to 1844) and occupied by the US (1916 to 1924). Independence is celebrated on the 27th of February every year. The native people of the Dominican Republic are known as Taino (Arawak Indians) whereas the native people of Dominica are known as Kalinago (Carib Indians). The Dominican Repubic is closer to the North American mainland and shares an island with the Republic of Haiti called Hispanola. Dominica is in the centre of the Caribbean between the two French Territories of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The national language of Dominica is English and the national language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish.

Can I book an overnighter's tour even though I am on a cruise ship? That will not be wise. As a cruise visitor, you have a limited amount of time at port/ on land. Most, if not all, overnighter's tours exceed 5 hours and therefore are considered full-day tours. Cruise tours are specifically designed for cruise passengers to be at maximum 5 hours or less. This is why they are half-day tours. However, if you are an overnighter, you can actually book a cruise tour but this can only be done after approval from Rainforest Taxi & Tours.
